Get Through Security Checkpoints Faster

Arrive Early: Travelers are advised to arrive 90 minutes early to ensure enough time to check their baggage and go through the screening process.

Unlock Baggage: Leave checked baggage unlocked to avoid having transportation security officers to forcibly unlock luggage should it require inspection.

Screening Process

Checked baggage The TSA screens 100 percent of checked baggage. The airlines, TSA and Hartsfield-Jackson work together to make the process as efficient as possible.

Shoes All travelers must remove their shoes and place them on the X-ray belt when passing through security checkpoints. For more information on screening, please click here for the shoe screening policy on TSA's Web site.

Outerwear Remove all outerwear (coats, jackets, warm-up jackets and blazers, etc.) and place them in the X-ray machine. If the coat or jacket is used as the innermost layer of clothing, you do not need to remove it.

A more extensive pat-down will be conducted if you alarm the metal detector or are referred to additional screening. Transportation security officers will verbalize the process as they conduct the inspection. You may also request a private screening.

Lighters have been added to the prohibited items list past the security checkpoints.

Carry-on baggage is limited to one bag plus a personal item per passenger. Personal items include: purses, briefcases, laptops or backpacks. Please contact your airline for details.

Only ticketed passengers are allowed beyond screening checkpoint. If you have a medical, parental or other specific, verifiable need to accompany a ticketed passenger, please check with your airline to determine proper procedures.

For carry-on baggage, please limit the number and type of electronic equipment. This includes: cellular phones, paging devices, laptop computers, personal listening devices (iPods, CD players), electronic toys and games, etc. Whenever possible, place these items in your checked baggage.

All laptops and video cameras must be removed from their case. They are subjected to both X-ray and physical inspection.

If you have a medical condition that requires you to carry a needle and/or syringe on your person or in your carry-on baggage, you must have the required medication on your person. The medication must be packaged with a pharmaceutical label or professionally printed label identifying the medication.

Avoid carrying beverage containers through the screening checkpoint area. Screening these items will increase your check-in processing time. Please plan to purchase any food items you may wish to carry on board the aircraft after you have completed the screening process. Food, gifts and other services are generally available in the concourses beyond screening. If you have special dietary needs, please contact your airline to confirm these services are provided on your flight.

To encourage a consistent flow of vehicle traffic, parking restrictions are strictly enforced. Passengers and visitors are encouraged to use the hourly parking decks located at the North and South terminals when needing extra time to pick up or drop off passengers. Vehicles are not allowed to park at the curbside. Unattended vehicles will be ticketed and towed.

Please Note: Under heightened security alerts curbside passenger pickup/drop-off may be prohibited. Vehicles dropping off or picking up travelers on the curb are not allowed to sit or park. Unattended vehicles will be ticketed and towed.

Picking up Passengers

You may pick up arriving passengers at the curbside. For your convenience and to make locating your visitors easy doors on both North and South Terminals are numbered - 1 through 6 from East to West. Please ask your visitor to identify the door number and include the letter in front of it (i.e. N-5, S-1, etc.) Then advise the arriving passenger to wait for you by one of the numbered doors.

Dropping Off Passengers

Currently, you may drop off travelers directly at the main terminal for curbside check-in. Airline check-in is available on both the North and South Terminal for most airlines. We advise you to use Hourly Parking Lots, which are adjacent to the terminal for convenient passenger drop-off and when you need to escort passengers inside to the ticket counter.
